25 Weeks Pregnant – Your Baby Development, Symptoms, & Tips

You are in the 25th week of your pregnancy now. Your bump is as big as a soccer ball, and you may be finding it difficult to carry your growing bump. Your baby’s movements are becoming more noticeable now, and you may also be enjoying your pregnancy glow.

When you are 25 weeks pregnant, you are nearing the end of your second trimester. Your baby will continue to grow for several weeks more, but if he were to be born now, his chances of survival are good. He can respond to sound, touch, and light. You may even feel him jumping or kicking in response to loud noises.



1. Insomnia

You may be having trouble sleeping these days. You may be nervous about delivery, or your growing belly is making sleeping comfortably impossible.  Take a warm bath before you sleep, or try mindfulness meditation. Use a pregnancy pillow to sleep more comfortably on your side.

2. Heartburn

Pregnancy hormones relax the valve at the entrance of the stomach, causing acidic contents to move into the esophagus. Avoid greasy and spicy foods to prevent heartburn. Most antacids are safe to use during pregnancy, and they are also rich in calcium.

3. Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are itchy and swollen veins around the anus. They are quite common during pregnancy and are made worse by constipation. To avoid discomfort, eat foods rich in fiber and drink lots of water.

4. Tingling in hands

Increased blood volume during pregnancy can lead to swelling in the hands, which can put pressure on the nerves in the wrists.  This elevated pressure can make your hands numb or cause tingling. This condition is called carpal tunnel syndrome. Take a break from repetitive hand movements, or try some exercises to stretch and strengthen your wrist muscles.

5. Backache

As your bump grows, you change your posture to adjust. Pregnancy hormones also soften the ligaments of your back, which can lead to backache. Avoid lifting heavy objects, sleep on a firm mattress, and get a pregnancy massage.

6. Pelvic girdle pain

Pelvic pain affects one in five women during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the pelvic joints of some women become stiff and unstable, which causes inflammation and pain. Consult your doctor, and he will refer you to a physiotherapist who has experience in treating this pain.

7. Restless leg syndrome

Some pregnant women may experience an uncomfortable tingling in their legs, along with an urge to move them. The symptoms are more pronounced at night. Iron deficiency and sensitivity to certain foods can lead to restless leg syndrome.

8. Braxton Hick’s contractions

Braxton Hicks contractions are mild and do not cause any pain. These practice contractions feel like hardening and tightening of the uterus, and they go away after you change position.

9. Frequent urination

Your baby is now putting additional pressure on the bladder, so you may have the urge to pee more often.

10. Clumsiness

Clumsiness is a common symptom during pregnancy. Pregnancy hormones loosen your joints, which makes your grasp on objects less firm. Fatigue during pregnancy can also make you clumsy. You may also have moments of lightheadedness or dizziness.

Your body at week 25 of pregnancy

Your bump is now the size of a soccer ball, and you can feel the top of your uterus halfway between your belly button and the bottom of your sternum. By now, you would have gained between 15 to 18 pounds or 25 to 40 pounds if you are expecting twins.

Usually, during the second and the third trimester, women gain around one pound per week. You won’t gain the exact same amount each week; there will be some fluctuations. Your doctor just wants you to gain weight steadily so that you and your baby remain healthy. Your baby’s movements will also become more energetic and develop specific patterns now. You will feel a lot of kicks while the baby is awake.

Your baby at week 25 of pregnancy

Your baby is now 13 inches long and weighs 1¾ pounds. He is steadily gaining brown fat, which helps to protect him at birth.

  • Your baby’s eyelids will open for the first time this week.
  • His lungs are developing but are not mature yet. They have started developing surfactant, a substance that will help the lungs expand after your baby is born.
  • Small blood vessels known as capillaries are forming under the skin and in his lungs. These capillaries will give your baby’s skin a pink hue.
  • Your baby’s heart rate is now around 140 beats per minute.
  • Your baby can now stick out his tongue.
  • Your baby’s brain’s cortex is developing into elaborate layers.

Tips to be followed at 25 weeks pregnant

1. Eat healthy food

Continue to eat a healthy diet that contains fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, and dairy. Avoid soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk, sliced cold meats, fish high in mercury, and sushi.

2. Sleep on your left side

You must start sleeping on your left. When you sleep on your back, your womb can put pressure on the blood vessels that supply the placenta and your baby with oxygen.

3. Moisturize your belly

Your growing belly is causing your skin to stretch, causing dryness and itching. Apply moisturizer on your skin to soothe the itchiness.

4. Childbirth classes

It’s time to book childbirth classes. During childbirth classes, you will learn about labor and delivery. You also learn about pain management techniques and labor techniques.

5. Stay active

You should continue to exercise and stay active right until the end of your pregnancy. Swimming, walking, and yoga are some excellent options.

6. Get the nursery ready

This week is perfect for getting your baby’s room organized. Start with the basics. Pick a crib, a changing table, a diaper pail, and some storage for diapers, clothes, and swaddle blankets.

7. Wear you seatbelt

Your seatbelt must be feeling a bit uncomfortable now, but it is essential to keep your seatbelt on while you are in a car. Some of you may feel motion sickness while traveling in public transport. You can sip on some cold water. Sit on the aisle seat and focus on the horizon.


Your pregnancy week 25 doctor’s visit

If the glucose screening test that you took during your week 24 appointment came out too high, you would be back to the doctor clinic for a 3-hour glucose tolerance test this week. For this test, you will be asked not to drink or eat anything for eight to 14 hours before your test.  Once you are at the doctor’s clinic, you will be asked to drink a liquid containing 100 grams of glucose. Your blood will be drawn before you drink the liquid. This process will be repeated three more times with a gap of 60 minutes. Each time your blood glucose level will be checked (1).

Tips for the partner

Studies show that the support of the partner during pregnancy can improve the wellbeing of the mother and the baby after birth (2). You can help your partner in several ways:

  • Listen to her
  • Help with the household chores
  • Take her out on a date
  • Join childbirth classes with her
  • Take her to the doctor’s appointments

Final thoughts

At 25 weeks, your little one is steadily gaining weight. He is now 1¾ pounds. Small blood vessels called capillaries are forming under his skin, which is giving his skin a pink hue. You have now gained around 15 to 18 pounds, which may cause symptoms like backache and difficulty in sleeping. Continue to eat a healthy diet, sleep on your side, and stay active.
