All About Kapha Balancing Diet – Balance Your Kapha

Do you suffer from allergies, cold, & flu every other day? Do you always keep a close watch on your weight, but hardly have you lost any pounds? Are you on a diet food but still can’t get rid of extra fat?

These are the symptoms which suggest that your kapha may not be in balance. Accumulation of mucus, frequent attacks of cold & natural weight gain is the most typical signs of aggravated kapha dosha levels.


Kapha dosha governs the body’s growth, structure, fluid balance, the health of joints & lungs.

For kapha types, it is hard to lose weight because they ignore kapha-balancing items in our daily diet that pushes kapha dosha out of balance.

Kapha dosha is cool, greasy, heavy, & slimy and therefore, dry, light, & hot foods pacify kapha.

Abide by Ayurvedic dietary rules listed below and you can bring kapha dosha back into balance.

What are the dietary rules for kapha types?

When kapha increases, metabolism and digestion slow down. So, kapha types should take foods that improve digestion & metabolism.

You should include pungent, bitter, & astringent taste foods more in your diet. Include dry, warm, & light foodstuffs and avoid sweet and salty tastes.

Following a diet routine is an excellent way to keep a check on kapha dosha.

  • Always eat warm and freshly-cooked foods. Avoid re-heated foods, processed, packaged, & preserved foods
  • Eat small meals with a gap of at least 3 hours
  • Use minimum water, oil, & sweeteners while cooking vegetables and whole grains
  • Try fasting once a week or stay only on honey mixed water once a week
  • So not have breakfast if you don’t feel hungry. Have stewed apples or a glass of lemon water mixed with honey in breakfast
  • Stay away from cold, heavy, sweet foods like rice, bread, noodles, desserts, refined sugar, refined flour-made foods especially during night time
  • Drink boiled warm water whole day and avoid sugary snacks
  • Warm vegetables cooked in ghee and whole grain is a perfect food combination for kapha types

Most of the grains are bulky and hence, not suitable for kapha. Some of the grains which are light and dry can be used in moderate quantities. Avoid eating bread. Eating whole grains with vegetables is an excellent diet to pacify kapha.

Barley, quinoa, millet, corn flour, buckwheat, amaranth, rye, popped or parched rice

Long grain rice, brown rice, oats, wheat


All vegetables are good for kapha. Vegetables should be taken warm, steamed, or lightly cooked in ghee and with spices.

Asparagus, alfalfa, bell pepper, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, green beans, parsley, spinach, peas, Brussels sprouts, bell peppers, carrots, radish, onions, celery, lettuce, cilantro, chilies, mustard greens, green leafy veggies, potatoes, mushrooms

Tomatoes, eggplant, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, okra, squash, bottle gourd, zucchini


As most beans are dry and increase wind, they are good for kapha. They work best if soaked & sprouted.


Better be avoided or minimized

Mung beans, tofu, split peas, kidney beans, red lentils, black gram, aduki beans, lima beans, peanut, soybeans

Chickpeas, black lentils


Fruits are cooling in nature and increase water content in the body; thus, increasing kapha. However, they can be taken warm, lightly stewed with spices like cinnamon, black pepper.

Dried fruits, pomegranate, apple, cherries, cranberries, raisins, papaya, apricots, pineapple, lemon

All sweet fruits, avocado, oranges, sweet lime, melons, cherries, mango, dates, coconut, grapes, peaches, pears, banana, plums, watermelon, tangerines


Use all kinds of oils but in small quantities. You can replace oils with ghee.

Ghee, mustard, flaxseed, safflower, corn

Almond, coconut, olive, soybean, margarine, sesame, avocado

Spices & herbs

All hot spices are good for kapha. Spices improve metabolism and hence, should be taken abundantly. However, reduce salt intake.

Black pepper, nutmeg, ginger, bay leaf, basil, mint, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, asafoetida, fenugreek, cloves, cayenne, coriander, dill, fennel, garlic, mustard seeds, oregano, peppermint, saffron, star anise, turmeric, horseradish

Sea salt, rock salt 

Dairy products

Dairy products are heavy and tend to cause overweight; hence, they should be taken in less quantity. Milk should be made warm with spice like cardamom, cinnamon, & ginger.

Goat milk, soy milk, skimmed milk, buttermilk

Cheese, cream, butter, yogurt, ice cream, kefir, sour cream, cottage cheese

Nuts & seeds

Nuts tend to aggravate kapha, so; they should be eaten lightly dry-roasted with a little salt & no butter.

Sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds

Almonds, pistachio, walnuts, coconut, lotus seeds, pecans, peanuts, cashews

Animal products

All types of meat tend to increase kapha. Kapha types generally should avoid meat, and they can live healthy better as vegetarians. However, if you want to take meat, then make meat soup with little oil and spices.

Chicken, turkey, eggs

Fish, shellfish, seafood, beef, duck, lamb, pork


Never drink ice-cold water & drinks. Always drink plain water or warm water is best if you are prone to frequent cold & flu. Spice tea is the best beverage for you.

Warm water, green vegetable juice, wheatgrass juice, herbal tea, spice teas such as ginger, cinnamon, alfalfa, dandelion, chicory; filter coffee, tea

Iced tea, sweet fruit juices, soft drinks, carbonated water

Kapha dosha aggravates naturally in the spring & winter season, so you should choose a kapha balancing diet especially in these seasons. If you continue with the above recommended diet, you may gradually notice the positive changes like decrease in laziness & fatigue.
