Aliens, UFOs, life on other planets, and creatures from beyond earth have always been a subject of our fascination ever since we discovered the extraterrestrial space. We all have some theories of our own selves of what aliens must be like. However, the Hollywood has made sure to help us imagine things we possibly couldn’t. Be it the humankind going on wars against aliens or being friends with them. Even the best of actors and directors have not rejected the idea of such fiction and have been continually making movies since the 20th Century. Here are our picks for the top 10 best alien movies of all time.
1. Alien (1979)

This Alien movie is based in the distant future when a crew on a spaceship called Nostromo is returning to Earth when they suddenly receive a signal from the moon. They decide to first land on the moon to see who needed help but as the crew members get out and find the hive of a strange creature like species the ones left inside the spaceship realise that the signal was a warning. As the eggs start hatching, all their lives are in danger.
2. E.T. the Extra Terrestrial (1982)

E.T starts to fall sick being away from his home and as the government take it in their hands to interfere, Elliot and his siblings must find a way to send E.T back to his home. Don’t forget to put ET on your list of Alien movies because it is just amazing to watch.
3. The Thing (1982)

A Norwegian research station sends a help signal to the US research station in Antarctica while looking for a dog that escaped. As the helicopter of the Norwegian station crashes, the US station sends help only to find all of them dead and also find a burned carcass of a strange animal. On taking the corpse back to their station, they examine it concluding that it is an alien that can take any form it desires. So, anyone can be affected, and no one would know about it!
A suspense-filled and thrilling Alien movie.
4. Independence Day (1996)

Spaceships are recognised by the military to be heading their way into Earth. With no means to contact them an ex-scientist named David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) discovers that the aliens are coming to Earth to attack and capture it. It is up to Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and the military to save Earth from the invasion.
Independence Day is one of my favourite Alien movies, and you should watch it.
5. Men in Black (1997)

The movie focuses on an alien fighting agency called MiB. The finest of the agents of the association named K (Tommy Lee Jones) hires James Edwards (Will Smith) to be his partner for missions. One day, an alien reaches Earth in search of an object called ‘The Galaxy’. K and James have to do everything in their power to stop him.
6. Avatar (2009)

In the land of Pandora, humans are trying to mine a precious resource from the land of the Na’vi’s (natives of Pandora). Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is subconsciously transferred to the avatar body of a Na’vi as he is sleeping. He gathers Intel for the chief also learning the ways the natives live and interact. At one point, when the humans are about to attack the mother tree which is the source of life for their material Jake has to make a choice between humankind and the Natives who started to feel like home.
This alien movie will make you sympathise with the aliens and hate humankind.
7. District 9 (2009)

- Actors: Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope, Nathalie Boltt
- Gross revenue: $115.65 million
A spaceship landed in South Africa in 1982 with a species of aliens who were first welcomed by humans but after 28 years have been stuffed and confined in an isolated area called District 9 where no one is allowed. Wikus (Sharlto Copley) becomes friends with two aliens and wants to help them.
8. Predators (2010)

Eight people survive death by opening their parachutes but soon realise that they are headed into a jungle on a strange planet. They start walking to find a way out but are attacked by some aliens and come to the conclusion that it is all a kind of a game where the humans are the targets and are being hunted by the alien creatures. Will the team survive this or fall into the traps set by the predators?
One of the most unpredictable alien movies that I enjoyed watching.
9. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

- Actors: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton
- Gross revenue: $178 million
Major Case (Tom Cruise) is in the army but has never physically fought so naturally when he’s put in a battle to fight off aliens who have attacked Earth, he dies in a matter of minutes. As he dies killing one of the aliens whose blood spurts all over him before he dies, Case gets stuck in a time loop where he repeats the same day over and over. With the help of Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), he finds a way to stop the aliens from finding a clue every time he dies.
10. Life (2017)

- Actors: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson
- Gross revenue: $100.5 million
The international space station has found an alien creature that lives on Mars and starts conducting tests and research, even naming it Calvin. What seems small and powerless at first, starts growing at a rapid rate feeding on oxygen. Calvin is far more intelligent than any of them fathomed and began finding ways to survive by feeding on the crew one by one to survive. The only task of the space station is not to allow the alien creature to reach Earth.
Finishing my list of Alien movies is 2017’s Life which is both fascinating and disgusting.
