File Hosting Services – Top 5 Best Cyberlockers

A cyberlocker is an online service for uploading, storing and sharing files. It is also known as ‘cloud storage device’, ‘online file storage provider’ or ‘file hosting service’. It offers both free and paid services, and as a result, the storage size provided varies depending on the type of service.

The size typically ranges from a few hundred Megabytes to 2 or more Gigabytes. It is beneficial for sharing and syncing files, storing personal data as well as content caching.

There are multiple cyberlockers available in the cyber world but to choose the best one among them is tough. It is because cyberlockers are viewed with controversy and are considered as a boon for sharing pirated and copyrighted contents.

Cyberlockers possess one to one connectivity, and this makes it challenging for surveillance tools to catch the offenders.

Still, there are many legitimate users of cyberlockers, and this plus point has often helped different cyberlocker site-developers to escape punishment.

In this article, we will speak on some of the well-known cyberlockers and their features. Let’s get started.

What are the best cyberlockers?

There are many popular cyberlockers used worldwide, and some of the most preferred ones are discussed below.

MediaFire is one of the largest competitors to other cyberlockers in the cyber world. It truly simplifies the workflow of a user and is very convenient for use.

Some popular cyberlockers that cease to exist

There are some cyberlockers which do not exist anymore but were the user’s first choice during their presence. RapidShare and HotFile are two such examples.

RapidShare was launched in 2002. It was efficient to handle 3 million users simultaneously and is said to contain 10 petabytes of data uploaded by the users.

It had queues for uploading and downloading files, and there was no limit regarding file size or hard-drive space.

Its functionality started deteriorating due to issues regarding distribution of files to a large number of anonymous users. Also, it concentrated on personally subscribed cloud-storage only.

Eventually, it ceased to exist from March 2015.

HotFile was founded in 2006 at Panama. It offered storage space upto 400MB only. Unregistered users were supposed to lose their data after 90 days.

There was no limitation on the number of daily downloads/uploads. Downloaders were required to pass a CAPTCHA test before proceeding.

In December 2013, HotFile was shut down after it signed a $4 million agreement with Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).

Though cyberlockers are excellent services for syncing and sharing files, they are also a matter of controversy. Since it is difficult for surveillance tools to monitor user activity because of one-to-one connectivity, cyberlocker is a haven for some users to circulate pirated and copyrighted materials.

Sometimes, business models also mushroom regarding the spread of pirated materials through cyberlockers. Revenues are earned through users engaged in uploading and sharing such contents.

Though lawsuits are often filed against the cyberlockers, due to involvement in copyright infringement activities, they get away because they also have a large number of legitimate users and the intention of site-developers is positive.

So, though the cyberlocker, in general, is a threat to privacy, still, it is best for file management and file storage purpose. There are several ones mentioned above, like DropBox,,, etc, which offer sufficient storage space and simplify user’s workflow.
