  • Movie Length: 125 minutes
  • Director: Garry Marshall
  • Actors: Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Laura San Giacomo, Jason Alexander
  • Gross revenue: $178.4 million

Starting the list with a classic: Pretty Woman is probably one of the first few romantic movies that I saw. The story goes where Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is in a desperate need of a girl to be his plus two on a business trip as he has broken up with his girlfriend. He hires an escort Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) to escort him for many social and business functions. He transforms her look to a total ladylike one.

She stays with him for a week, in the course of which the two start developing feelings for one another. Will the two give in to love or go their separate paths?

The story of this romantic movie begins with Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) and his Son Jonah (Ross Malinger) starting a new life due to the death of wife and mother Maggie from Cancer. On Christmas Eve, Jonah convinces his dad to talk on a radio show about how much he misses his wife. Many women who hear him write to him including the female lead of the film Annie Reed who has an odd feeling about her current relationship with Fiancé Walter.

She writes to meet her at the Empire State Building in New York. Will the two meet or circumstances have them miss their moment?

3. Titanic (1997)

  • IMDB Rating: 7.8/10
  • Movie Length: 194 minutes
  • Director: James Cameron
  • Actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Kathy Bates
  • Gross revenue: $659.33 million

Based on the horrible tragedy of the ship Titanic comes a love story cleverly directed by James Cameron. The story of this romantic movie revolves around the storytelling of one of the survivors ‘Rose Dawson’ (Kate Winslet) whose sketched picture is recovered from the shipwrecks of Titanic by a very famous treasure hunter. Rose Dawson who is engaged to a very wealthy man named ‘Cal Hockley’ (Billy Zane) falls in love with a lowly and penniless artist Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio). The two enjoy life to the fullest before experiencing the breaking of the iceberg right before their eyes.

The horror of deaths of more than half of the passengers including that of Jack Dawson will leave you teary-eyed and broken-hearted toward the end of the movie thinking ‘If only the ships close by hadn’t had their radios switched off’.

Another Julia Roberts’ flick in the list of best comedy movies. Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is a famous actress who by chance meets a bookstore owner William Thacker (Hugh Grant) where he by accident spills juice on her clothes and offers his home for her to change. The two share a kiss before she disappears asking him never to mention to anyone about the kiss.

  • Movie Length: 101 minutes
  • Director: Adam Shankman
  • Actors: Mandy Moore, Shane West, Peter Coyote, Daryl Hannah
  • Gross revenue: $41.23 million

This is probably one of the best romantic movies of the 21st Century. However, I personally liked the book better. But, the movie makes it up with the amazing soundtracks by the band Switchfoot and Mandy Moore.

Landon Carter (Shane West) is a popular teenager whereas Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) is a simple girl who is made fun of by everyone. Landon and his friends get caught for drinking for which Landon takes the total blame and as a punishment has to do community service and participate in the school play. He asks Jamie to help him memorise his lines to which she agrees on a condition that he does not fall in love with her.

Landon laughs it off, but as days go by, finds himself falling deeper in love with her. Jamie brings to light a painful truth when he confesses his love for her. Will they make it?

  • Movie Length: 123 minutes
  • Director: Nick Cassavetes

Another romantic movie based on a novel by the famous writer Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook is a story that is being narrated by an old man Duke (James Garner) from his notebook to an elderly Lady Ms Hamilton (Gena Rowlands) who is suffering from Amnesia. The story from the notebook is about a young boy named Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and a young girl named Allison Hamilton (Rachel McAdams). Their young, raw and unconditional love for each other is put to the test when her family finds out and sends her far away. Allison falls in love with a soldier while away but fate has decided otherwise as Noah and Allie meet just days before her wedding.

The story keeps getting paused as the routine of the current situation if the two old people continue. But why is Duke narrating Ms Hamilton this story?

The story goes as: Holly Kennedy (Hillary Swank) is married to Irish man Gerry (Gerard Butler). Her husband falls ill and dies sending her into depression and loneliness. She cuts off all communication from friends and family until her birthday when she receives a letter from Gerry who is the only person to get her out of her mess. One of the cutest romantic movies of all time: The story of the movie is about 500 days of Tom’s relationship with Summer. Tom (Joseph Gordon- Levitt) falls in love with his boss’s assistant summer (Zooey Deschanel). The two start dating but on day 290, Summer breaks up with Tom saying it’s not working out and she doesn’t believe in true love. Devastated Tom goes into depression and is moved to the consolations department. He meets Summer once more at a co-workers wedding and tries his best avoiding her but ends up at a party in her apartment where he spots her engagement ring.
