Early Life

School, College and Sports

William James O’Reilly was born in New York City, U.S. O’Reilly attended St. Brigid Parochial School in Westbury and Chaminade High School in Mineola. He later attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. O’Reilly was an avid sportsman.

He played baseball in his school and was a punter in National Club Football Association in his college. He later attended Queen Mary College at the University of London from where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.

Bill also played semi-professional baseball for New York Monarchs. In 1973, O’Reilly earned master o arts in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University. He also received Master of Public Administration from John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1996.

Bill O’Reilly was married to public relations executive Maureen E.McPhilmy from 1996 to 2011, after which the couple filed for divorce and separated. He has a son and a daughter.

Career

Beginnings-Reporter and Columnist

O’Reilly began to write articles for his school’s newspaper The Circle. After receiving the bachelor degree, he taught English and History at Monsignor Pace High School, Miami. When he was doing majors in Boston, he worked as a reporter and a columnist in several papers including Boston Phoenix.

Broadcasting

O’Reilly eventually began his career as a reporter and anchor in local channels and won Dallas Press Club Award for showcasing his excellence in investigative reporting and two Emmy Awards for his work.

In 1982, he became a CBS News correspondent where he covered the wars in El Salvador and the Falkland Islands. He left CBS news within four years over a dispute.

O’Reilly then joined ABC news in 1986 as a correspondent where he hosted daytime news briefs.

In 1989, O’Reilly joined Inside Edition, a tabloid-gossip television program as an anchor, and quit the show in 1995.

O’Reilly’s breakthrough show was The O’Reilly Factor. The then-startup Fox News Channel hired O’Reilly in 1996 which earned him fame and dollars. The show was routinely the highest rated show. However, in 2017, O’Reilly was fired from the channel after the public report stated that he paid in millions of dollars to settle the sexual harassment claims of six women.

Post Fox News career, O’Reilly launched a podcast called No Spin News and also began to stream the video version of it digitally.

He is also a recurring Friday guest on the Glenn Beck Radio Program.

O’Reilly has authored and coauthored a number of books since 1998 the earnings of which make a significant part of his income apart from his hosting salary.

O’Reilly hosted a radio program called The Radio Factor, which had more than 3.26 million listeners and he was ranked #11 on the Heavy Hundred, a list of the 100 most important talk show hosts in America.

O’Reilly also wrote newspaper column weekly which appeared in numerous newspapers including New York Post and The Chicago Sun-Times. However, he discontinued the column in 2013.

Films

O’Reilly has also made cameo appearances in films including An American Carol, Iron Man 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
