Early Life

William Theodore Walton III was born in La Mesa, California. He attended Helix High School and played for the school’s basketball team. He then played for John Wooden at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).


He even played for the United States men’s national basketball team at the 1970 FIBA World Championship when he was 17 and became one of the top amateur athletes in the US.

Walton was first married to Susan Guth and had four sons. He is currently married to Lori Matsuoka.



After leaving college, Walton was taken as number one overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1974 NBA draft. He played for the Blazers from 1974-1978. In 1979, he signed with the San Diego Clippers and played till 1985, after which the Clippers moved to Los Angeles. Walton then chose to play for Boston Celtics and played for another two years.

Throughout his career, Walton suffered from foot and ankle injury, and he officially retired in 1990 from the game. Though Walton is remembered for his injuries, he is also one of the very few players who received highest praises from his coaches and co-players.

Colour Commentator

Bill Walton had a stuttering problem as he grew up. However, he overcame it to become a commentator post his retirement as a professional player. Walton served as colour commentator for NBC from 1990-2002, the Los Angeles Clippers from 1990-2002 and ABC/ESPN from 2002-2009.

Following his surgery on his back, Walton returned to full time broadcasting as a game analyst for Pac-12 basketball coverage in 2012.

Walton’s interest in music is widely known, and he runs his satellite radio show, “One More Saturday Night”.

Walton published his memoir “Back from the Dead: Searching for the Sound, Shining the Light and Throwing it Down” in 2016 which remained on the New York Times bestseller list for two weeks in April 2016.

In 2015, he wrote a foreword to the book Unconditional Honor: Wounded Warriors and their Dogs by author Cathy Scott.

He is also a playable character in the video games NBA Street Vol.2, NBA Street V3, NBA 2K12, NBA 2K13, NBA 2K14, NBA 2K15, NBA 2K16 and NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and lent his voice to NBA 2K5 and NBA Shootout 2004.

Walton is one of the most exceptional players and has received several awards including two times NBA Champion, two times NBA All-star, three times USBWA Player of the year, three times Sporting News College Player of the year, three times first-team All-Pac-8 and No. 32 retired by UCLA.

In 1990, Walton was inducted by the San Diego Hall of Champions into the Breitbard Hall of Fame honouring San Diego’s finest athletes both on and off the playing surface.

In 1993, Walton was also inducted into both Basketball Hall of Fame and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame. In 1996, Bill Walton was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest players of all time.
