Robbert Barisford Brown, known by his stage name Bobby Brown is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actor. The singer who began his music career in a group and later went solo is worth $2 million today.

Early Life

Robert Barisford Brown was born in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.  When Brown three, he saw one of his childhood idols, James Brown perform on stage, and he wanted to become a singer ever since then. He joined the church choir and discovered and developed his singing abilities. He married singer Whitney Houston in 1992 and the couple split in 2006. Brown then married Alicia Etheredge in 2012.

Brown has gotten arrested on various occasions for the use of cocaine and narcotics. As a child, Brown was diagnosed with ADD and was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his early thirties.

Career

Music

Bobby Brown began his career in music at the age of 9 in the R&B pop group New Edition in 1978. The group consisted of Brown and his childhood friends and went on to perform in several talent shows. In 1982, the group signed a deal with Streetwise Records which released their debut album Candy Girl. Despite the success of the group, Brown was unhappy about the payment and left the group in 1985 after releasing three other albums. Bobby’s signature song Every Little Step which got released in 1988, not only earned him an Emmy but also opened the door for numerous opportunities.

He later signed a contract with MCA and released his solo debut album King of Stage in 1986. Although there were some ups and downs initially, his breakthrough album Don’t Be Cruel got released in 1988, of which five hits reached the Billboard Hot 100. Brown continued to release other hit albums like Bobby, Forever and The Masterpiece.

In 1990, Bobby Brown reunited with the New Edition at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. A full-fledged reunion occurred in 1996, with the release of the album Home Again, in which Brown contributed lead vocals for two hits. He again reunited with New Edition in 2005 at the BET 25th Anniversary Special and again they performed in 2009 BET awards. As of 2016, Brown and New Edition continue to play together.

Some of his soundtracks have appeared in movies. Brown has also appeared on the music video and sang lead vocals on the song Voices That Care.

During the late 80s and early 90s, Brown released various hits that made to the top 10 chart. His hits garnered him with numerous awards including Grammy Award, American Music Award, People’s Choice Award and Soul Train Music Award. 

He has gone on various concert tours including Heartbreak Tour, Don’t be Cruel Tour and Head’s of State Tour.

Films and Television

Brown also made his way to the film industry, initially making cameo appearances in the movies like Ghostbusters II, Be Somebody… or Be Somebody’s Fool! And Krush Grove. He later appeared in films like Panther, A thin line between love and hate, Go for Broke, Nora’s Hair Saloon, Two can play that game and Gang of Roses.

Brown also appeared on various TV shows like Mother Goose Rock ‘n’ Rhyme, Being Bobby Brown, 24 hours with…., Real Husbands of Hollywood, Celebrity Fit Club and Gone Country.

Brown has been nominated for different awards for his appearance in music videos and TV series, and he won Black Reel Awards for Television in 2017.

In 2008, Bobby Brown published his autobiography Being Bobby Brown: The Truth, the whole truth and Nothing But…,  with Derrick Handspike which he co-wrote.

The singer’s current net worth is an estimated $2 million. He earned millions during his peak period during the 90s. The singer/ actor derives from his music albums and also from the movies and TV shows and concert tours.

He lives in his house in Beverly Hills with his wife Alicia and their kids.

Philanthropy

Bobby Brown’s daughter from his first wife Whitney Houston passed away in 2015 when she was just 22. In 2015, he urged fans to honour his late daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown by helping a shelter for victims of domestic violence set up in her memory.

He supports Bobbi Kristina House, a non-profit organisation which offers housing and counselling to female victims of domestic violence and their children.

Although Bobby has openly admitted about his addiction to alcohol and drugs, he has gone through a lot of pain to come out of the addiction. The untimely death of his ex-wife Houston and his daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown brought nothing but misery. He has found peace with his current wife Alicia who is helping Bobby Brown rediscover his passion.
