Feet and meter are one of the more commonly used units of measurement of length.
Feet is part of the Imperial system that is predominantly used in the US whereas meter is part of the SI and the metric system. Of the two, the meter is considered to be more standardized as compared to feet. As their usage is frequent, it is very beneficial for everyone to know the interconversion.
It is decreed that one foot is equivalent to approximately 0.3 meters. That is,
1 foot = 0.3 meters
The symbol for feet is an apostrophe – ‘
Meter is denoted as ‘m’.

What is feet?
Feet is part of the Imperial system used in the USA as a measurement of length.
One foot is one-third of a yard. As in,
1 foot = 0.34 yards.
The symbol for feet is ft.
Historically, the length of objects was measured by the most accessible objects. Hence, the human body has been used to provide the basis for units of measurement.
The foot was a standard measurement unit in many systems and their civilizations such as the Greek, Roman, Chinese, French and English systems.
Though, one of the cons was that it differed in length across different countries, cities and sometimes, it even changed depending on the trade.
The foot of a white male is about 15.3% of his height.
During the International yard and Pound agreement in July 1959, length of the International yard was finally agreed upon as 0.9144 meters. Through that, the feet was also defined to be 0.3048 meters precisely.
The USA predominantly uses feet as the unit of measurement in engineering and related fields, whereas the UK public uses feet for measurement of height. The standardized measurement unit in aviation for altitudes (even in metricated countries, sometimes) is feet.
What is meter?
The meter is one of the most standard units of measurement and is part of the metric system.
The meter is the distance light can travel in a vacuum in 1/299 792 458 seconds.
It is also used in the International System of units (SI).
The symbol for the meter is m.
Meter is often used along with prefixes like centi, deci, kilo, micro, milli, etc. Of these, centimeter, millimeter and kilometer are the most familiar ones to the common man.
The unit, meter, was first described in 1793 as the one ten-millionth of the distance between the equator and the North Pole. In 1799, it was changed to measure a prototype metric bar.
In 1960, the definition changed to in terms of a certain number of wavelengths of an emission line of krypton-86. In 1983, however, the description that is currently in use was adopted.
The etymological roots of the word meter are traced back to the Greek word metero which means to measure or to count.
As part of the metric system, the meter has widespread usage in almost every field possible. While units like centimeters and millimeters are used to measure lengths of objects we commonly use in everyday life, kilometers are used to measure the distances between cities and places.
How to convert feet to meter?
As mentioned earlier, one foot is roughly equal to one-third of a meter. That is,
1 foot = 0.3048m
So, x feet is converted as x*0.3048 meters,
X ft = x*0.3048m
An Indian woman has an average height of about 5ft. To obtain this value in the metric system of measurement, this value is converted to meters. To convert this value into meters, we have to multiply 5 with 0.3048.
5*0.3048 = 1.584m.
Therefore, the average height of an Indian woman is 1.584m.
How to convert meter to feet?
One meter is equal to 3.2808ft. That is,
1m = 3.2808ft.
To calculate how much x meters would measure in feet, multiply the number of meters with 3.2808.
Let’s say that we need to convert 2.5m into feet. We multiply 2.5 with 3.2808 which gives us 8.202ft. That is,
2.5*3.2808 = 8.202ft.
- In ancient times, the foot was 111/42 inches. In recent times, it is 12 inches which is found to be the length of the average man’s foot.
- The motto of the International Bureau of Weights is Metro chro which can be taken to mean “Use measure” hence encouraging both measurement and moderation. It was a saying of the Greek philosopher Pittacus.
- There is also a unit called Survey feet which is used to distinguish it from the current International feet. Survey feet is the unit used for measuring most of the survey data before the international feet was defined in 1959.
- Mount Everest has an elevation of about 8848m (29029 ft) above sea level.
- For the measurement of area, square feet is the preferred unit in the USA as part of the Imperial system of units.
- The metric system that includes meter was first introduced by the British in the year 1884.
