Veneers are a thin covering of pre-fabricated and laboratory made glass called porcelain. The veneers are custom made and placed over the front surfaces of front teeth to correct esthetic abnormalities in teeth. However, there are several pros and cons of veneers that you should know.

Veneers easily whiten the teeth, fix minor nicks and notches and hide damaged enamel. On the other side, they go heavy on budget and increase sensitivity which could be irreversible damage.

Along with veneers pros and cons, you should know the advantages of veneers over composite bonding, when to get veneers and how the procedure is carried out.

Veneers are expensive and irreplaceable, so it is important to know how to maintain the veneers. Let’s us read everything in detail.

What are Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin casings of medical-grade ceramic or fabricated glass that are attached to the front surfaces of the teeth for a smile transformation. The material of construction resembles the appearance of natural dental enamel.

Veneers are crafted for individual teeth for each patient.

Dentists can use veneers for an impressive number of cosmetic dentistry procedures, ranging from teeth whitening to orthodontic adjustments. Thanks to their lifelike appearance and wide array of functions.

Porcelain veneers rank among the most trusted and popular procedures in cosmetic dentistry.

Veneers Pros and Cons

Dental veneers are a good way to hide discolored and damaged teeth. But it’s important to weigh various veneers pros and cons before deciding on this option.

Make an appointment with your dentist to find out if dental veneers are a suitable solution for you. (1)

1. Easily whitens teeth

Drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes or eating highly pigmented foods over the years eventually take their toll on your teeth, turning them into a shade of yellow or brown.

Veneers are stain-resistant and you won’t have to worry about discoloration and staining of veneers. Also, you need not worry about having your veneers whitened.

2. Fix minor cosmetic problems

Unequal sized teeth or gap between teeth can be treated with braces or other orthodontic treatments. But the process takes a lot of time. Whereas these problems can often be corrected with veneers fast and easily.

Veneers are attached only to the front of your teeth. They don’t change their positions. Instead, they camouflage minor orthodontic problems.

It’s important to note that veneers can’t always replace orthodontic treatment. Your dentist might refer you to an orthodontic treatment if the misalignment is severe.

3. Hides damaged enamel

Enamel is durable but may get worn down from rigorous tooth brushing or dissolved by acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits and juices. The stomach acid associated with acid reflux can also damage your enamel(2)

Here, veneers can come in handy. Veneers are a proper treatment for teeth with enamel abrasion or enamel erosion.

1. Expensive

The price of veneers will vary based on your location, your dentist and the number of teeth you want to be restored. But one thing is for sure that they are expensive. Composite, on the other hand, is less expensive than veneers.

2. Increased Sensitivity

People experience an increase in teeth sensitivity after getting veneers. This is because before placing veneers, a substantial portion of the tooth is cut out by the dentist so that applied veneers don’t look bulky. (3)

Tooth sensitivity is uncomfortable, but you can manage it with the right products like anti-sensitivity toothpaste.

3. Irreversible Procedure

Veneers are permanent because your dentist needs to change the structure of your natural teeth to place them correctly. In this way, the outer layer of enamel may be removed to make room for the new veneer casing over them without making them look bulky.

Veneer over a Composite bonding

Bonding can be of two types depending upon the requirements of the teeth. Bonding is done using either composite resins or porcelain veneers to cover up the surfaces of damaged teeth to give a good and even appearance to the teeth.

Composite bonding

This type of bonding involves reduction of the teeth which need to be treated. The filling material is not fabricated in a lab. Instead, it is built upon the broken tooth after treating the tooth with acid.

It is a less expensive and faster method than veneering. But composite does not give as smooth and long-lasting results as veneers do.

Veneer bonding

A veneer is made using porcelain (fabricated glass) in a lab. Veneers are used to match the color and shape of your tooth. Porcelain veneers are stronger than composite with a better finish, while composite veneers are less expensive.

A porcelain veneer gives a better color match to your teeth and typically lasts for five to ten years depending on how well the patient maintains them.

When do you need veneers?

You can reach out to your dentist for Veneering if you see one of the following imperfections in your teeth –

Spaces between your front teeth

Spacing and diastema between your front teeth are always a good reason to see your dentist and discuss treatment options. Veneering for gaps is a suitable treatment in most cases because it is a fast method to fill the gaps compared to conventional orthodontic treatment.

Yellow or brown stains on teeth

Veneers cover up all stains on teeth. In fact, it covers the entire outer enamel of the surface of the front teeth. Teeth bleaching is also an option, but it involves chemical treatment and veneers last way longer than bleaching.

Cracked, chipped or fractured teeth

If you see a part of your teeth chipped off, cracked or fractured, then your dentist will suggest a veneer as it can save the tooth and cover it from further damage.

Improving sizes and shapes of mismatched/misaligned teeth

Mismatched and misaligned teeth can be corrected by reducing the natural teeth and covering them up with veneers.

Procedure of veneering

The affected tooth is cut or prepared in a way that it is best suited to receive the veneer. Anesthesia may or may not be needed and it totally depends upon the depth of the preparation of tooth.

  • The dentist will first use a shade guide to select the color of veneer that matches most closely with the color of the tooth.
  • Once your dentist has figured out the color, he/she will acid etch (rough up) the surface of the tooth. The tooth will be coated lightly with a conditioning liquid or bonding agent which helps in bonding.
  • After the tooth is prepared, your dentist will apply the veneer. Then the veneer is fixed with ultraviolet light.
  • It may take up to two visits to complete the entire procedure.

Maintaining Veneers

It’s important to take a good care of veneers. Otherwise, they may need replacement soon. Veneers offer an expensive but lasting aid that improves the appearance of teeth.

  • Avoid stain-inducing beverages like tea, coffee, red wine and other substances that can stain the veneers.
  • Practice good oral hygiene to keep your new veneers beautiful. It is essential to brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Avoid nail-biting and chewing on hard substances.
  • Wearing mouth guards is advisable if you are a sports person and involved in too many physical activities. The mouth guard is also required if you have teeth grinding habit.

Final words on veneers pros and cons

Veneers are expensive, but they are the best way to get that perfect smile. On average, veneers last about ten years. Dental porcelain is stronger and more durable.

Of course, veneers are like natural teeth and thus are susceptible to damage. But with proper care and damage control, veneers can last longer.
