So, it doesn’t come as a surprise when many people opt for weight loss pills to help them lose weight. After all, these pills offer an easy way to lose weight, without dieting or exercising.  Lipozene is one such weight loss supplement that promises ‘dramatic weight loss results while eating what you love.’ This weight loss supplement has been on the market for more than a decade, but does Lipozene work? Let us find out.

What is Lipozene?

Lipozene is a weight loss pill that has glucomannan as its only active ingredient. It is derived from the roots of the konjac plant, which is also known as elephant yam.

Konjac plant has been used in Japan, China, and South East Asia as a food source and medicine. Not only is it used for making noodles, tofu and snacks, it is also used in the treatment of asthma, cough, hernia, breast pain, burns, hematological and skin disorder (1).

Glucomannan products have been available in the western countries since the 1990s. These products have been used to treat constipation, regulating cholesterol and managing diabetes.

Glucomannan is known for its extraordinary ability to absorb water. This property makes glucomannan the perfect choice for treating constipation, insulin resistance, managing type-2 diabetes, weight loss diverticular disease preventing hypoglycemia, treating type-1 diabetes (2).

Lipozene, a weight loss supplement manufactured by the Obesity Research Institute, claims to help people lose weight thanks to extraordinary abilities of glucomannan.

This capsule also contains gelatine, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium silicate, stearic acid, titanium dioxide and FD&C blue no 1 (3).  These ingredients have no role in weight loss.

The science behind Lipozene

There have been many studies on the weight loss effects of glucomannan, the main active ingredient in Lipozene. The results were small but positive.

During a 2015 study on overweight adults and children, researchers found that glucomannan may reduce body weight, but it does not affect BMI (4).

According to another study done on 176 men and women, researchers found glucomannan induced body weight reduction by approximately .8 kg per week (5).

Another clinical trial was conducted in 2008, to compare the effect of fibers on body weight. The 16-week trial concluded that supplementation with fibers like glucomannan induced satiety and helps reduce LDL cholesterol (6).

Some other trials have not shown positive results. According to these trials, the positive effects of fiber supplements disappear after around six months.

During a 2013 trial, 53 participants were given 1.33 grams of glucomannan before breakfast, lunch, and dinner for eight weeks. The scientists discovered that there was no major weight loss or change in body composition, hunger and glucose parameters at the end of eight weeks (7).

One should keep in mind that these studies have been done on the effectiveness of glucomannan and not on the Lipozene tablets.

Recommended dosage

According to the manufacturers, you should take two capsules of Lipozene 30 minutes before each meal with at least 8 ounces of water. They suggest a maximum of six pills a day.

The manufacturers also recommend that you keep these pills in a cool and dry place. They also advise you not to take these tablets if you find the seal broken or if you are pregnant or lactating.

Benefits of Lipozene

Since there is no evidence of specific studies on the benefits of Lipozene, we shall discuss the benefits of glucomannan, the only active ingredient in Lipozene tablets.

1. Keeps you full

Glucomannan absorbs water and expands the stomach. This property of glucomannan helps to lower the rate at which the food leaves the stomach and helps you stay full for longer (8).

2. Helps relieve constipation

Glucomannan can help provide relief from constipation. This dietary fiber helps encourage bowel movements and release stubborn waste (9).

3. Reduces calorie absorption

According to studies, dietary fiber can reduce the absorption of nutrients in the body. This means that we get fewer calories from the food that we eat if we increase our intake of glucomannan (10).

4. May improve heart health

Some studies have found that glucomannan helps reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol and high triglycerides (11).

Glucomannan also helps by increasing antioxidant activity, which helps prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

5. Promotes gut health

This fiber promotes good bacteria in the gut, which helps improve the risk factors for obesity and metabolic syndrome (12).

6. Reduces diabetes risk

According to research, glucomannan lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, which helps to lower fasting blood sugar levels (13).

Though many other soluble dietary fibers also have the same health benefits, the superabsorbent properties of glucomannan are what make it even more effective.

Side effects of Lipozene

Lipozene capsules have been known to have some side effects in certain people. These include –

1. Constipation

Though glucomannan in Lipozene is known to provide relief from constipation, it can have the opposite effect in some humans. So, it is advisable to start with small amounts of Lipozene and then increase it gradually.

2. Diarrhea

Diarrhea is one of the most common complaints against Lipozene in the online reviews. When our body produces excess water to get rid of fiber, it can lead to painful diarrhea.

3. Choking

Glucomannan is very absorbent. If we do not take the Lipozene tablet correctly, it can expand before it reaches the stomach and leads to choking. So, make sure you take it with a full glass of water.

4. Flatulence

The expanding fiber in this capsule can lead to flatulence and abdominal discomfort.

5. May react with medication

Consult with your doctor before taking Lipozene, if you are taking medication for diabetes. This weight loss pill may block the absorption of your medicine and reduce its effectiveness.

Should you take Lipozene?

Though there is some scientific evidence to suggest that glucomannan in Lipozene is helpful in weight loss, this fiber is available in many less expensive forms on the market. So, does Lipozene work and should you take it?

Though Lipozene is relatively safer than many other weight loss supplements, it can be a choking hazard if not taken correctly. If you do not consume it with enough water, it can get stuck in your throat and choke you.

Taking more than the recommended amount can also lead to intestinal blockage.

In 2011 a group of customers sued the Obesity Research Institute, the makers of Lipozene, for false advertising. This resulted in a five million dollar payout (14).

In 2016 another lawsuit was filed against the Obesity Research Institute for falsely marketing its products (15).

We would not recommend Lipozene as a weight loss cure as it does not seem to be as effective as the manufacturers claim. The side effects of this product are a cause for concern.

While we dot deny the health benefits of glucomannan, we believe you can take this water-soluble dietary fiber on other forms occasionally.

Opt for healthier ways to lose weight

Weight loss pills like Lipozene cannot provide you with the magic cure for weight loss. A regular exercise regimen,  combined with a healthy diet is essential to lose weight and to keep it off. Follow these tips to help you lose weight.

1. Have a high protein diet

Having food that is high in protein can boost your metabolism and make you lose up to 100 calories more per day.

2. Avoid added sugar

Avoid foods and drinks that are laden with sugar. These are some of the most fattening foods that you can eat.

3. Drink more water

Water helps boost metabolism and also helps you hydrated.

4. Avoid processed food

Avoid processed food and opt for whole grain foods. Not only are whole foods healthier but they also help you stay fuller for longer.

5. Eat soluble fiber

Many foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes that are rich in soluble fiber are a great way to add fiber to your diet. These help keep your gut healthy and improve digestion.

6. Strength training

Not only does lifting weights keep you healthy, but it also prevents your metabolism from slowing down.

7. Eat slowly

It takes a few minutes for our brains to process that we are full. So, eat slowly and chew thoroughly to avoid overeating.

8. Sleep well

Sleeping for at least eight hours every day is essential for your emotional well being, and it helps you to stay fit.

Does Lipozene work – Final words

Lipozene is a weight loss pill that promises weight loss without any additional diet restriction and exercise. The only active ingredient in this supplement is glucomannan.

While there is some scientific proof that glucomannan helps in a moderate amount of weight loss, there is no individual scientific research on Lipozene.

The customer reviews of Lipozene are quite varied. While some people insist that it is indeed a miracle cure, others reviewers claim that this supplement has made no difference in their weight.

Some people have also noticed side effects of Lipozene like constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort.

While Lipozene may have worked marginally for some people, there are easier and safer ways to lose weight and to keep it off.
