Be it home or office; you must have faced a situation where you go on a mission of finding your router IP address. It becomes more difficult if you are from a non-IT background. In reality, it is quite easy to find router IP address. But, before we start, let us clear some basics.

Any broadband router has two IP addresses as public IP address and private IP address. The public IP address is also known as external IP address. A public IP address is used to hook you up with the internet. No two public IP could be same at any cost.

Whereas, a private IP address is used to maintain the internal or private network. Any two-separate internal or private networks could have a precisely same IP address. The reason is simple; no private IP address can talk outside their private network.

In short, any computer or networking device on a private network first talk to the router through private IP address. Then the router accesses the internet through its public IP address assigned by ISP (internet service provider). It means, the router sits in between your PC and ISP as a middleman.

Now let’s see how to find your router’s IP address.

What is my router IP address?

Till now, you must have understood that your wireless or wired router has two IP addresses. But you must be wondering why do I require to know my router IP address. Well, there could be several reasons where you would need to know the IP address of your router.

  • When you are setting up the router
  • You want to configure some setting on your router
  • If you want to change your router’s IP address
  • If you want to troubleshoot your router
  • You want to know your router’s IP address to avoid any future IP address conflicts

What is my router public IP address?

Your router’s public IP address is set every time dynamically by your ISP when you connect to the internet. There are several web-based IP lookup services, where you can know the public IP address of your router. This method is applicable for finding public IP address of any website to identify their geolocation, etc.

But this information is useful for instant use as it is dynamic. Another way is through your router’s admin panel or dashboard.

What is my router private IP address?

There are many ways to find your router’s private IP address. If you are using a Window-based system then just head to Start->Run and type cmd. You will see a command prompt. Now, just type ipconfig or ipconfig /all. Within a few seconds, you will see a bunch of numbers and letters.

Type CMD in Run

Look for IPv4 address or IPv6 address. Usually, you will find private IP address in the range of 192.168.x.x (Class C private IP address range).

IPCONFIG command will reveal default gateway IP address

MacBook users can go to Apple Logo-> System Preferences-> Network-> Click the connected Wi-Fi or network-> Go to TCP/IP tab and find out your laptop as well as your router’s IP address. Sometimes your default gateway is nothing but is your router.

Click TCPIP and find your private IP address

What is the default IP address of different routers?

Now for some reasons, nothing worked out, and now you want to know the default IP address of your router. You have no idea whatsoever because either your router is new or you have reset your router to default settings.

That’s I have compiled an information list of most popular wireless or wired routers and their default IP address. This list also comes in handy when your router IP address range is other than 192.168.x.x.
