Ways to get relief from dry mouth condition
1. Drink water
Keep a bottle handy with you and take regular sips of water throughout the day. Avoid drinking excess water at once and try the former method for a better outcome.
Don’t drink soda if water is unavailable, carry enough water with you always. Fizzy drinks will not help with hydration. Instead, soda can make our mouth even drier. Drink water has other health benefits too and will clean toxins from the body.
2. Limit alcohol consumption
Alcohol is acid and has a dehydrating effect on our body. If you are suffering from dry mouth and drink alcohol, then you are aggravating the dryness quotient of your mouth.
Alcohol decreases the anti-diuretic hormone in the body. As a result, our body is not able to re-absorb water, hence higher the alcohol intake, the more fluid loss due to urination.
If you can’t limit your alcohol consumption, then you should drink lots of water to compensate for the fluid loss caused due to alcohol consumption.
3. Cut down on caffeine
Are you addicted to caffeine? If yes, then you need to know that excess caffeine also causes dehydration just like alcohol. Coffee also increases the loss of fluid by increasing urination.
In case you don’t want to give up on coffee make sure for every cup of coffee you drink at least one glass of water to maintain the balance and get relief from dry mouth.

Cannabis smoking causes cotton mouth. Some cannabis users recall that sometimes they experience excess dry mouth situation and drinking water also fails to quench their thirst.

Many adults breathe through their mouth. When you breathe through your mouth, the air causes the gums and tongue to dry. Some children have mouth breathing habit, and if not treated such children grow up to be mouth breathers as adults.
Ideally, we should breathe through our nose and not our mouth. If you notice that you are a mouth breather, then you need to consult a doctor for treatment.
Due to mouth breathing, you may even wake up at night feeling thirsty and your mouth could feel extremely dry. Switching to breathing through your nose can relieve your symptoms. Take the help of a doctor if required.
6. Use a mouthwash
If you suffer from dry mouth, then you need to change your alcohol based mouth rinse and buy an alcohol-free mouth rinse. Alcohol-based mouth rinse tends to dehydrate the already dry mouth.
Switching to a mouthwash containing, Xylitol is effective in dry mouth conditions. Xylitol in the mouth rinse prevents gingivitis, tooth decay and also keeps your oral cavity moist.
7. Use air humidifier at night
If you are not on a tight budget, then you can buy an air humidifier for your room. The air humidifier will add moisture to your room at night, and this will help combat gums from becoming dry if you breathe through your mouth and otherwise also.
You can sleep peacefully without waking up feeling thirsty. In case you can’t afford an air humidifier you can increase the moisture of your room by drying clothes indoors, buying a houseplant or do facial sauna at home.
These methods will help you get some relief from cotton mouth condition.
8. Stimulate your salivary glands
Chewing sugar-free gums, eating citrus fruits and drinking lots of water can help stimulate saliva formation. Chewing sugar-free gums or citrus fruits stimulates your salivary gland to produce saliva.
Do not eat excess citrus fruits since they cause erosion of tooth surface when consumed in excess. Also, try to buy sugar-free gums which have Xylitol as one of the constituents.
9. Artificial saliva
Artificial saliva can provide relief from dry mouth condition, but it is not the permanent cure for dry mouth. They are available in the form of gels, spray, swabs, etc.
Artificial saliva moistens and lubricates the mouth but does not have the antimicrobial properties which saliva contains. Hence you need to take utmost care of oral hygiene to prevent tooth decay and gum problems.
