If you’ve had one too many at a party the night before, chances are you may wake up with a hangover. Hangover symptoms usually begin 8 to 10 hours after drinking, and they include a headache, thirst, dizziness, nausea and sensitivity to light. You often wonder what is the best hangover cure? Also, you will often get plenty of advice when it comes to cures for hangovers. Unfortunately, what works for your friend may not work for you. Try these remedies to get rid of the symptoms of a hangover and find the best cure for yourself.

1. Get plenty of sleep

The best hangover cure is to sleep it out. An extra hour or two can work wonders and help you recover from the symptoms of a hangover like a headache and fatigue. Call in sick if you have to be at work the next day. Working with a splitting headache can be tough, and nobody wants a grumpy co-worker around.

2. Eat a healthy breakfast

Eat a heavy breakfast to cure the symptoms of a hangover like a headache, fatigue and nausea. One of the reasons why we suffer from hangovers is that the blood sugar levels in the body go down. Having a healthy meal after waking up helps maintain the sugar levels in the body.

3. Drink lots of water

Alcohol can cause dehydration in the body. So, drink a lot of water and rehydrate your body to get rid of the symptoms of a hangover. Drink a glass of water before you go to bed (keep a bottle of water beside your bed in case if you get up during night). Drink a glass of water as soon as you get up and continue having more water for the next few hours.

Note: Add a little lemon to a glass of warm water and have it. A bit of ginger added to this mix helps with nausea.

4. Avoid caffeine

Coffee can dehydrate your further, so it is better to avoid coffee. Opt for a cup of sweetened tea instead as it will give you an energy boost without dehydrating you too much. If you can’t do without your cup of coffee in the morning, have a glass of water after you have finished your coffee.

5. Have vitamins

You can lose a lot of vitamins because alcohol is a diuretic. Have a vitamin B complex pill to combat the effects of a hangover. This tablet includes B1, B2, folic acid, B6 and B12. You can also have a glass of orange juice to get your dose of Vitamin C.

6. Exercise

You may not like the idea but going out for a run will help get rid of a hangover. It will increase your metabolism and help get rid of the toxin in the body faster. A healthy dose of endorphins with fresh air can do wonders for you. If running is too much for you, go for a walk or try some yoga. If you do not like the idea of exercise then you can try other hangover cures.

7. Eat a banana

Bananas will help replenish levels of potassium in your body. This will help get rid of soreness and cramps in your body. Have a banana smoothie to replace the minerals and electrolytes that you may have lost due to dehydration. You can also be proactive and have a banana before you start drinking.

8. Drink tomato juice

Alcohol consumption can lower blood sugar levels in the body. Low sugar levels cause fatigue, depression and weakness. A glass of tomato juice can boost your blood sugar levels and hydrate your body. Tomato juice is one of the most popular hangover remedies.

9. Ginger

If you wake up with symptoms of a hangover like nausea, ginger is the cure for you. It helps ease symptoms like gas, bloating, indigestion and vomiting. You can either have ginger tea or chew on a piece of ginger. If you don’t like the strong flavour of ginger, take two pills of ginseng capsules with water.

10. Drink coconut water

Drinking coconut water is a great way to rehydrate your body. Coconut water contains as many electrolytes as sports drinks and does not include any artificial colours or sweeteners. Drinking coconut water is a great way to alleviate the symptoms of hangovers.

11. Have asparagus

According to a study, asparagus extract can boost levels of enzymes that break down alcohol. So according to researchers, if you eat some asparagus after a drink or two, it will help get rid of toxins from the body and prevent symptoms of a hangover.

12. Have eggs for breakfast

Eggs are rich in cysteine, an amino acid that helps in breaking down toxins in the body. So, you’re suffering from a hangover have some eggs. Eggs also have Vitamin B, which will help reduce the symptoms of hangovers.

13. Have a high-carb meal

Have carbs if you’re feeling nauseous after a night of heavy drinking. Carbohydrates will control the churning in your stomach and bring your blood sugar levels up. Eat some toast or crackers to settle your stomach and get your blood sugar levels up.

14. Pain medication

If your headache is too severe for you to handle, take a painkiller. Go for not-steroidal, anti-inflammatory pills like aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen.

15. Take a warm bath

This one is my favourite hangover cure. Get rid of all the toxins in your body by taking a warm shower or soaking in a hot bath. Add Epsom salts in your bath water to speed up the detoxification process. A bath will definitely make you feel better and refreshed.
