Our Research -8 Most important facts
The above features are enough to convince anyone that IPVanish is a great VPN. To provide a more honest review, the research team at Stemjar evaluated IPVanish on the eight most important factors for choosing a VPN.
IPVanish claims it offers the “best VPN speeds” because of their “top tier” server network connecting all parts of the world.
Using a server that is closer to our current location, our research team found out a download speed of 94.80Mbps and an upload speed of 9.23Mbps for a baseline connection of 100Mbps. This speed is a great test result as it maxed out our baseline speed.
When we checked it with servers from different countries, we noticed that the download speed maintained an average of 82Mbps, thus proving that it did offer the “best VPN speeds.”
Not only did it has high speed, but the performance was also consistent during our test period. So if you’re looking for a VPN which offer you best performance, then IPVanish will suit you the best.

2. Does IPVanish work well with Netflix and other Geo-restricted websites?
People opt for VPNs to stream services like Netflix, YouTube, etc. As VPN continues to toil hard to find ways to access location-based content, these sites continue to build firewalls and work on ways to keep VPNs out.
IPVanish didn’t explicitly state that their VPN works with Netflix, which is understandable. Many VPNs have been shying out and steering clear of mentioning an official statement.
But the research team wanted to know if IPVanish supports Geo-restricted sites. They started connecting to different servers around the world and tried to access Netflix to watch something specific to their location.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go well with all of the servers. With few of the IPVanish servers, we were not able to connect to Netflix, but with some, connection to Netflix went through fine.
First few servers kept throwing that annoying little proxy error message. But once correct server identified we could find out the charm with IPVanish.
Though the team was successful in finding a server that could be used to access Netflix, not all the servers can be used to access them.
3. VPN Servers
When it comes to network, speed matters. And it is an understanding that we can get excellent network coverage and thereby faster download/ upload speed if there’s a server located closer to us.
IPVanish has got this covered. It has more than 1300 servers in over 75 countries, thus covering all the nooks and corners of the Earth.
IPVanish has servers in America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa and even in smaller countries like Turkey and Albania. Thus IPVanish has provisioned servers to serve every individual on the Earth.
More server locations mean more options for the user. You get to choose the VPN server that would suit your needs at any point in time.
IPVanish is also “the world’s only Top Tier” VPN provider. It means that IPVanish owns and manage their server network.
This results in many benefits such as better speed, reliability, and better security.
4. Security and Privacy
IPVanish relies on AES-256 protocol for encryption, the golden standard, and it is currently unbreakable.
Most of the VPNs let the user choose the VPN protocol they want to use in their apps. But IPVanish goes above and beyond by providing you means to also select the port number for OpenVPN setup.
IPvanish has an additional feature called “Obfuscate OpenVPN Traffic,” which hides the VPN tunnel from being detected and thereby avoids getting blocked even in anti-VPN countries like China and Iran.
IPVanish also maintains zero logs about the user. Though the jurisdiction of IPVanish is not known for maintaining zero records about the user, it doesn’t save data of any kind to preserve your civil rights to privacy.
Most of the VPNs offer to kill switch – a feature that automatically blocks off all the traffic if the VPN connection drops.
Kill Switch helps to keep the data and your identity safe even when the network connection is poor.
The kill switch worked spectacularly well when we disrupted the connection to check if it keeps the data secure.
IPv6 leak protection
IPVanish provides the user with an IPV4 address and blocks all the IPV6 addresses. It also makes sure that the original IPv6 address does not leave the secure tunnel.
Leak Test results
We put the Windows and iOS IPVanish apps through some VPN leak tests like ipleak.net to identify any issues. The research team faced no issues or leaks, and IPVanish passed out in flying colors.
IPVanish secured all the traffic by providing us with an IPv4 address; it blocks IPv6, thereby keeping the data safe.

5. User-friendliness – Works flawlessly on Android/ iOS/ Mac/ Windows
IPVanish supports lots of devices like
IPVanish’s app is very similar to its Windows counterpart. It provides a feature called Quick Connect which displays your IP address and your location.
It also displays a list of the country name and the cities were their servers are available. Choose one of them, and you can easily connect to that server.
The US server is selected by default because it assumes your default location to be in the US, which is a bit strange and inconvenient. But other than that the app is similar to the other VPNs.
Along with a graph showing you the download and upload speed, it also displays your new IP address and location.
The app doesn’t have a favorites section which makes the user manually choose a server by scrolling through the list. This scrolling can become problematic in devices with small screens.
It has more options when it comes to the port through which we connect to a server. The choices are between 443, 1194, and 8443.
It also allows the user to choose between OpenVPN UDP and OpenVPN TCP connections.
It also provides a split tunneling feature which lets the user select the apps on which they don’t want to use IPVanish. This feature would come in very handy when using apps that don’t support VPN.
The iOS app opens the same way as the Android version with the Quick Connect feature. It too displays a list of cities that have IPVanish servers and the like the Android counterpart the iOS version also has the US as the default country.
But unlike Android, it offers a simple favorites tab. By tapping the star next to a server we can add the server to our favorites list.
As we had with the Android client, no “kill switch” is provided, but we do get two additional VPN features. One contains the ability to switch protocols between IKEv2 and IPSEC. The other feature is the “auto-connect” which turns IPVanish on/ off depending on the site.
The user can white list and blacklist sites, and depending on these choices, IPVanish decides which sites to protect. You can also set it in such a way that VPN should start whenever you navigate to Netflix.
VPN needn’t be accessible only apps. They can be used through VPN browser extensions, which are a lightweight and a handy mechanism to connect to a web browser like Chrome, Firefox, etc.
Though the browser extensions can be beneficial, they only protect the web browser, which is problematic if you want to protect other apps.
Unfortunately, IPVanish doesn’t support browser extensions like the other VPNs.

6. Customer Support
IPVanish aims to provide you with the best help they could offer. A system status link points out the company-wide problem areas.
The support articles are also neatly classified like Setup, Billing, troubleshooting, etc. Instead of a general answer, they also provide a specific solution for different devices.
When you can’t find the answer for what you’re searching for in the articles posted you can ask your queries in 24/7 live chat. The reply is almost immediate, and the responses are accurate and very helpful.
This option is far better than the generic send an email and wait till we reply. There’s also an email provided using which we can contact the support team directly.
We got a reply back in almost 10 hours, and the response was very detailed and as helpful as live chat.

8. What do others say about IPVanish
Instead of taking us for our word we’ll also tell you what others say about IPVanish.
- Forbes has classified IPVanish as one of the fastest VPN.
- PcMag, an American computer magazine, said that it protected data from prying eyes and is one of the few VPNs that boost download speed.
- An online publication focussed on Technology, TechRadar mentioned that IPVanish has excellent speed and choice for a server. It also said, “If you’re after quality, take the plunge with this VPN.”
Cons of IPVanish
With several advantages, it might be hard to believe that this VPN has some drawbacks to it. Here are the disadvantages of IPVanish.
Based in the US
Like it was previously mentioned, IPVanish is based in the US, and the US is not known to have the best privacy jurisdiction.
But the VPN promises zero logs and zero logs equals no data retained. Another drawback is that it doesn’t support bitcoins.
IPVanish is a great VPN and is reasonable in its pricing. People usually check for privacy, speed, and security, and IPVanish ranks well in all these categories.
It offers excellent speed and almost maxed out the probable download speed. It is by far, one of the VPNs that offer the best speed.
With more than 1300 servers spanning across 75 countries, it has left its footprints all over the world.
Though not all servers work well with geo-restricted websites like Netflix and Hulu, some servers provide uninterrupted access.
The only problem with IPVanish is the jurisdiction it is under, but the company has vowed that they don’t retain logs.
