John Madden, the former broadcaster and coach for NFL, is worth a $200 million as of 2018. The 81-year-old Madden, who began his career as an assistant coach is known to be one of the best coaches of the Oakland Riders. As a commentator, Madden earned at least $5 million annually apart from earning in millions from his endorsements.

Early Life

John Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota, raised in Daly City, California. He attended school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and then Jefferson High School. Madden is married to Virginia fields, and the couple has two sons, Joseph and Michael, both of whom are excellent football players in their respective colleges.


The End before the Beginning

John Madden attended Grays Harbour College, College of San Mateo and Cal Poly. A football player from his high school, Madden continued to play in his college and was drafted by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in 1958. However, a knee injury in his training camp marked an end to his playing career even before he could start playing professionally.

New Beginnings

Madden meshed his love for football with teaching and became an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College in 1960. He was later hired as a defensive assistant coach at San Diego State, where he served for three years.

In 1967, Madden got hired as linebackers coach for the AFL’s Oakland Raiders and became Raiders’ head coach within the next two years. John retired in the year 1978 and worked as a commentator on NFL games for over 30 decades. He worked for all the four major networks: CBS (1979-1993), Fox (1994-2001), ABC (2002-2005) and NBC (2006-2009), and retired in 2009.

Madden was the youngest coach to reach 100 regular season victories. He continues to remain the best coach of Raiders for highest wins.

Over the span of his career, Madden has earned a lot of accolades including Super Bowl IX Winner, Pro-Football Hall of Fame, California Hall of Fame and 16-time Emmy Award Winner.

John Madden has made a short appearance in some movies and music videos including Christine, Little Giants, The Replacements, and Paul Simon’s single Me and Julio down by the School Yard. In 1982, he hosted an episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live with the guest Jennifer Holiday.

He has lent his voice to the Madden NFL series of Football games, published by EA sports since 1988.

Even now, at the age of 81, he serves a co-chair of the NFL’s player safety advisory panel, Chair of the coaches subcommittee to the competition committee.
