Kharjura – All you need to know

The Ayurvedic name of Date is ‘Kharjura’. The word means itching as it happens when someone climbs its tree which has a rugged stem. Kharjura is one of the ‘Trimadhura,’ i.e., three chief drugs which are sweet and rejuvenates the body.

Date palms are widely grown in hot, arid regions of the Middle East, West Asia, and North Africa. It is a tall tree attaining a height of 100ft. The trunk is covered with persistent bases of petioles & base is often surrounded by a dense mass of root suckers.

Dates have large, compound leaves that are 10-15 ft long. The male flowers are white, compact, sweetly scented with a short stalk. Female flowers are greenish, broader, and longer than male flowers. The date fruit is oblong, reddish, or yellowish-brown when ripe. It has sweet, fleshy pulp & cylindrical seeds. The fruit is used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Kharjura fruit contains 70% of carbohydrates i.e., sugars like glucose, fructose, sucrose. These sugars get easily digested and quickly supply the body with lots of energy. It is also rich in dietary fibers, minerals like calcium, iron, fluorine, selenium, and vitamins A, B-complex, & C.

  • To cure abnormal taste of mouth, gargle with the paste of Kharjuras & raisins
  • If you suffer from severe dehydration then take infusion made by boiling Dates and milk in a dose of 40-50ml
  • You can cure migraine by applying the paste of ground Date seeds
  • Eating 2-4 dates promotes expectoration, expels cough, and soothes chest
  • You can gain weight by eating Kharjura. Pound dried dates with equal parts of almonds, quince seeds, one-fourth part of each cardamom, dry ginger, and sugar. Take this combination daily with milk
  • To treat hoarse voice and expel out a cough, make a paste of dates, raisins, long pepper, and candy sugar in equal quantity. Add ghee & honey. Lick this paste thrice a day
  • When date syrup is mixed with milk & honey, it enhances virility and treats sexual disturbances
  • You can treat any kind of alcoholic intoxication with this remedy. Soak equal parts of dry dates, pomegranate, raisins, ripe tamarind, phalsa, the pulp of Indian gooseberry and Kokam fruit in 28 parts of water for 2-4 hours. Later churn the mixture well, filter and consume in a dose of 100 ml a day

What is the right dose of Kharjura?

You can eat two dates per day. If you have diabetes, then you should eat one Date in a day. If you are taking juice or infusion of date fruits, then consume 50-100ml. When using the paste, take 10-20g. Dates are not reported to have any significant side effects. But people with obesity, weak digestion, allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding should consume dates in a limited amount.
