Michael Oher, an American footballer who played for the Baltimore Ravens, Tennesse Titans and Carolina Panthers is worth a $20 million. Oher earned an average salary of $2.7 million yearly. Although a fabulous player, the world began to observe every single move of Oher on the field in detail after the release of the Oscar-winning film The Blind Side in 2009 which is based on his life.

Early Life

Michael Jerome Williams Jr. was born in Memphis Tennessee. Oher had a terrible childhood with his mom being an alcoholic and drug addict and his father was frequently in prison. When he was just a seven-year kid, he lived in various foster homes, and there was even a period when he was homeless. He attended eleven different schools during his first nine years as a student.

Oher applied for admission to Briarcrest Christian School. He began to play football under the guidance of the school’s football coach, Hugh Freeze and was soon named Division II (2A) Lineman of the year in 2003.

Oher was adopted by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy in 2004.

Career

In 2005, Oher participated in U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Oher received scholarship offers from Tennessee, Louisiana State, Alabama, Auburn and South Carolina. However, he decided to attend the University of Mississippi and played for Ed Orgeron. He then played for Ole Miss Rebels football team and became the first-team freshman All-American.

The Baltimore Ravens picked Oher for the 2009 NFL Draft. He signed a five-year contract on July 30, 2009, for the position – offensive tackle.

In 2014, he signed a four-year contract with Tennesse Titans. However, after his severe toe injury, Tennesse Titans released Oher in 2015.

Within a month of his release from the Titans, Oher signed a two-year contract with Carolina Panthers and a three-year extension contract in 2017. After a month of signing the extension contract, the Panthers had to release Michael Oher after he failed physical due to a concussion and currently, Oher is a free agent.

Throughout his football career, Oher has played in more than 100 games and has won several accolades including Super Bowl Champion, Jacobs Blocking Trophy, two-time First-team All SEC, Second-team All SEC and  Unanimous All-American and USA Today All American.

Books

In 2006, author Michael Lewis published his book The Blind Side: Evolution of a game, with Oher being one of the subject matters. Oher’s portion of the book was adapted for the film The Blind Side and was released in 2009.

In 2011, Oher released his autobiography I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness to the Blind Side and Beyond.

In 2010, Oher’s foster parents co-authored the book In a Heartbeat: Sharing the power of Cheerful Giving, in which they tell the Oher story in their own words.

His introduction in the official website btoinc.org reads “The cycle of poverty, addiction and hopelessness have impacted our communities for too long. I have built my foundation with the mission of serving those suffering from impoverished conditions and facing life hardships, and now it’s our job to help them defeat and win their battles.”

Conclusion

Michael Oher has not had a regular childhood. After living with various foster families and shifting to numerous schools, not having brought up with the necessary life lessons, what he has achieved today is to be appreciated. When asked about the movie “The Blind Side” which was received by the audience tremendously, Oher, in an interview explained that not everything portrayed in the film is accurate and that he was not happy with the kind of attention he received post the movie release.
