Michael William Krzyzewski was born in Chicago, Illinois. Krzyzewski attended St. Helen Catholic School in Ukrainian Village, and later went to Archbishop Weber High School I Chicago. Krzyzewski served in the United States Army from 1969-1974, after which he started a coaching career with Indiana Hoosiers and then with Army Cadets. In 1980, Krzyzewski became the head coach at Duke University and led the team to several wins.

In 2015, when Duke defeated St. John’s in Madison Square Garden, he became the first men’s coach to win 1,000 NCAA Division I basketball games. He was also named the all-time winningest coach in the NCAA Division I tournament in 2016 when the Dukes defeated Yales.
