qBittorrent Review

qbittorrent review

qBittorrent is an open source torrent client. It gained popularity in less span of time because of its openness and Ad-free user interface. qBittorrent is an excellent alternative to uTorrent and BitTorrent. As per its website, a few volunteers developed it in their spare time. Also, they kept it as open source so that anybody could further extend its functionality with additional features.

Unlike other torrent clients, you do not have to pay anything extra for extensions and add-ons. Additionally, you will get regular updates and bug fixes.

Our verdict

▲ No advertisements

Open source and frequent updates

Take less space and utilise low resource

 Fewer add-ons and extensions

Application size and resource usage

The biggest problem with any torrent client is resource usage on a desktop pc or laptop. Sometimes, it can consume up to 1GB RAM (sometimes during memory leakage) and slow down your computer. But qBittorrent is free from such issues and takes around few MBs of RAM, and the file size is also in few megabytes.

User experience

As mentioned before, you are not bogged down with any advertisements on its interface. The application is clean and has all the options neatly stacked on the right-hand side of its application window. It has integrated torrent search feature, which is not a standard functionality.

It has a unique feature where you can remotely control the client through a Web-based interface, whose GUI is similar to the qBittorrent application.

Features

You get features such as media player option, sequential download, bandwidth scheduler, IP filtering, IPv6 compliant, torrent creation tool, encryption, etc. It is also available in 70 different languages. You can also prioritise torrents and put them in a queue. It also supports several BitTorrent extensions such as Magnet links, Distributed hash table (DHT), Local peer discovery (LSD), Peer exchange protocol (PEX), Private torrents, etc.

The only area where I see room for significant improvement is add-ons. The number of extensions and add-ons is way less than what you can get with other famous torrent clients such as uTorrent. qBittorrent is available on all platforms which include Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
