In 1998, he became a vice president of Exxon Ventures and president of Exxon Neftgas. With the merger of Exxon and Mobil, Tillerson was named the executive vice president of the new company ExxonMobil Development Company in 1999 and eventually became president and director of the same company by 2004.

On January 2017, after being sworn in as President of the United States, Trump formally sent his nomination of Tillerson as Secretary of State to the United States Senate. Tillerson was officially sworn in on 1st February 2017.
During his tenure, he visited several countries including Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey, Oman, Saudi Arabia to meet the Foreign Ministers.
