Rex Tillerson, the American government official and former energy executive, 69th United States Secretary of State under President Donald Trump is worth a whopping $310 million. Tillerson became a prominent personality after becoming the chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, and for his services as the Secretary of States under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Early Life

Rex Wayne Tillerson was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, U.S and raised in Vernon, Texas; Stillwater, Oklahoma and Huntsville, Texas. Tillerson has been active in Boy Scouts for most of his life and even earned the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth. Tillerson attended Huntsville High School.


He also received a college scholarship from the University of Texas Longhorn Band. He received Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Tillerson is married twice. He has twin boys from his first marriage, and after his divorce, Tillerson is married to Renda St. Clair since 1986, and the couple has one son. St. Clair also has a son from her previous marriage.



Tillerson began his career as a production engineer in Exxon Company in 1975. With a span of two decades, he was promoted to general manager and then to President of the Company.

In 1998, he became a vice president of Exxon Ventures and president of Exxon Neftgas. With the merger of Exxon and Mobil, Tillerson was named the executive vice president of the new company ExxonMobil Development Company in 1999 and eventually became president and director of the same company by 2004.

Soon, he rose to a prominent personality after he was elected to be the chairman and the chief executive officer of ExxonMobil in 2006 and held the position until 2016.

He closely worked with the middle-east companies despite the opposition of then President Barack Obama, who argued that it would increase regional stability.

Tillerson also has close ties with President Vladimir Putin of Russia. In 2013, Putin awarded him the “Order of Friendship”, for his contribution to developing cooperation in the energy sector.

Secretary Of State

Tillerson was recommended for the Secretary of States by the former Secretary of States Condoleezza Rice and was backed up by former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

On January 2017, after being sworn in as President of the United States, Trump formally sent his nomination of Tillerson as Secretary of State to the United States Senate. Tillerson was officially sworn in on 1st February 2017.

During his tenure, he visited several countries including Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey, Oman, Saudi Arabia to meet the Foreign Ministers. He also visited Mexico and met with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs Luis Videgaray Caso, and acknowledged the need for cooperation in addressing migration, as well as arms trafficking.

Tillerson was angered by the political speech delivered by President Trump in the 2017 National Scout Jamboree and even called him a “moron”. During late 2016, Trump expressed his views through his tweets, many of which contradicted Tillerson’s views giving rise to the speculation of termination of Tillerson’s service.

On March 9th, 2018, Trump tweeted that Tillerson will be replaced. Tillerson stated that he was unaware of his firing until he read the tweet. Sources close to Trump state that the upcoming North Korea talks and various trade negotiations are the reasons for his firing. His tenure will be officially terminated on 31st March 201. Tillerson’s mandate of 405 days is one of the shortest tenures in modern history.

Other Roles

Tillerson has also assumed several different roles like the trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies and the American Petroleum Institute. He is also a member of Business Roundtable, National Academy of Engineering and The Business Council.

Tillerson is a long-term supporter and a volunteer with Boy Scouts of America and even served as their National President from 2010 to 2012.

In 2009, Tillerson got inducted into the Eagle Scout Hall of Fame of the Greater New York Councils. Tillerson was named one of the most powerful persons in the world by Forbes in 2015.

World Petroleum Council, in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the oil and gas industry, awarded him with Dewhurst Award in 2017.
