Configuring a VPN may be difficult and most of the times requires some expertise in setting it up. However, errors can crop up while setting up a VPN connection between your VPN client and the server. Each of these errors typically come up with a VPN error code. VPN error codes are relevant because they help us know about the type of the error and its probable cause.
What is the different type of VPN error codes?
There are hundreds of VPN (virtual private network) errors each with a unique code which can occur while setting up a VPN Connection. However, there are some errors which occur in a majority of cases. These errors have been explained below:
VPN error 800
One of the most common VPN error codes which happen when setting up a VPN connection. This error occurs when the remote connection to the VPN server could not be established. The error comes with the message “Unable to establish a connection.” The probable reasons for such an error could be many.
The error could occur if the server is too overloaded or if it is not correctly connected. It could also happen if the VPN Network settings in the VPN Client software are not correct. In the case that L2TP/IPSec protocol is used for creating the VPN tunnel, it could be that the IPSec negotiations might not have been appropriately configured.
The error is likely to occur when the VPN connection type is Automatic. This kind of VPN error codes doesn’t give any details about the type of problem that occurred. It generally happens because of the VPN connection type being automatic. In the case that you know the kind of VPN connection, it is better to go to Network Settings and change the type of the VPN connection.
As mentioned above, this VPN error doesn’t come with much details regarding the problem which may have caused the error. So there are some steps required to fix it. First of all, you have to ensure the following:
- The server name of the remote VPN server is correct.
- Instead of the address name, it is sometimes better to enter the IP address of the VPN server.
- Double check the details of your username and password required for establishing a VPN connection.
Provided that you have the above details spot on, some other steps have to be taken to fix the error. Try disabling the network firewall and then creating the connection. This will help us know if the firewall is interfering with the connection.
If it is, then you need to update the firewall settings with the right port numbers. The port number for TCP is 1723, and that for IP is 47 for Windows VPNs. You can also shut everything down and then restart your computer and turn the VPN on.
VPN error 691
This is one of the more straightforward errors to fix. It displays the message “Access denied because username and/or password is invalid.”
The error has occurred because of you entering either the wrong username or password provided by your network administrator.
The password is case sensitive, so one should keep that in mind. Moreover, if the error persists, then you should verify the credentials with the network administrator.
VPN error 609
This error expresses the message “A device type was specified that does not exist.” The error is communicated by the VPN Client present on your computer.
It occurs when the definition of the device type is not configured correctly.
The definition for various device types has been given below:
- PPTP Tunnel : MS_PPTP
- L2TP Tunnel: MS_L2TP
- SSTP Tunnel : MS_SSTP
- IKev2 Tunnel: MS_AGILEVPN
VPN error 806
The message for this error is “A connection between your computer and the VPN server has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed.” The error states that VPN connection was established between your computer and the remote VPN server. However, the internet traffic which flows through it is unable to go through.
The error is generally because of the network firewall which is preventing the flow of the VPN traffic, which uses a General Routing Encapsulation (GRE) VPN protocol. Usually, the cause of the error is the TCP port 1723.
This port must be looked at by the network administrator.
VPN error 720
The message is again “A connection to the remote computer could not be established.”
This kind of error typically occurs when you are trying to set up the VPN manually. One of the most likely reasons for the error is that you have incorrectly entered the information about the type of VPN protocol.
The solution to the problem could be changing the connection type in the VPN settings to ‘Automatic.’ On the other hand, you can verify the protocol details about the connection with the VPN service you have subscribed to.
VPN error 732
Description and Cause
The error arose due to your computer and the remote server disagreeing with the control of PPP protocols. It can happen in Windows VPN’s when you don’t have the sufficient access rights required for the VPN connection.
The network administrator has to solve the problem. He may need to update the authentication protocol (MS-CHAP) support on the remote VPN server.
VPN error 51
This kind of an error is present on a Cisco VPN system. It displays the message “Unable to connect with the VPN subsystem.”
The error is communicated when the VPN software is unable to get past the network software on your computer. Due to this, it is unable to establish a connection with the remote VPN server.
The best solution to this kind of error is to restart your VPN software. Other could be to troubleshoot the local network software of your computer.
VPN error 0x800704C9
The error occurs when there are no SSTP ports available on the server.
As a solution to this error, you must verify whether the Network Access Server (NAS) has enough ports which are configured for remote access. The following steps need to be followed:
- Open the Remote and Routing Access Snap-In.
- After expanding the server, Right-Click on Ports and Select Properties.
- Click on Name and Select the option named WAN Miniport (SSTP). After doing so, click on Configure.
- The number in the Maximum Ports field should be 128.
- Click on the OK option in the Port Properties Dialogue box and close it.
VPN error 0x80072746
The error will come with the message “Connection closed by remote host.”
The problem is linked to the ‘https’ digital certificates. It occurs because of the VPN server being unable to find the required certificates or something being incorrect with the certificates.
You will not be able to do anything about this type of error. It is the responsibility of the VPN service to which you have subscribed.
VPN error 619
The error occurs because a connection with the remote VPN server could not be created. It usually occurs a lot on the Windows network due to the firewall blocking the access to the network.
In the case that there is a Windows Firewall, the following steps can be taken to solve the problem:
- Go to Settings from the Start menu. In the search box of the Windows Settings screen, type Windows Firewall.
- In the following Windows Firewall windows, Click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
- In both the Public and Private Network settings, you need to click on the option Turn the Windows Firewall off.
- Select Ok to exit and then trying turning the VPN on again.
Standard troubleshooting procedure
While most of the errors can be tackled using standard troubleshooting procedure, there are some errors which require a unique solution. First of all, let us learn about the standard guidelines for network troubleshooting procedures.
- It is essential to ensure that your computer is connected to a working Internet Connection.
- Network settings have to be perfectly aligned with the requirements for a connection to the VPN server.
- Check if the Network Firewall is interfering with the VPN connections by turning it off temporarily.
Over to you on VPN error codes
Configuring VPN in your laptop is quite easy, but you may hit a VPN error while trying to configure it. Most of the errors would be known and will have a similar fix as explained above. You should be contacting your VPN vendor in case you hit a problem for which no solution is available.
